Transforming Nursing

We’re not only listening to what our nurses are telling us healthcare needs, but also actively trying new solutions every day to help overcome some of the toughest challenges.

In an effort to understand the challenges nurses experience every day, Ascension led focus group interviews with nurses for their feedback and input. For example, our nurses told us that staffing, scheduling, teamwork and collaboration, and ongoing learning were important to them. We listened and here’s what we’re doing.

  • Staffing: We’re testing improvements such as offering flexible 4 to 12 hour shifts.
  • Scheduling: From self-scheduling to flexible shifts, we’re implementing new ways to offer nurses more and better options.
  • Teamwork: Teamwork starts with strong working relationships, which is why we encourage our nurses and doctors to work side-by-side as much as possible.
  • Learning: Ascension nurses have access to a wide range of learning opportunities and support, including simulation training and partnerships with local universities.

5-Point Plan

The Nursing Workforce Optimization five-point plan is endorsed by the Chief Nursing Officer Advisory Council, was collaboratively designed with our legal, finance, human resource, and valued System-wide collaborative partners, and was developed based on the immediate need to address nursing retention and increase workforce satisfaction. The overarching aims of the five-point plan are to:

  • Attract and retain professional registered nurses working at top of licensure
  • Restore resiliency and joy
  • Reduce nursing turnover
  • Decrease the need and presence of agency nursing across the System
  • Provide career progression and lifelong learning opportunities
