Lourdes Hospital has provided compassionate care to those in need since 1925 and has participated in the 340B program since April 2016. The 340B Prescription Drug Program is a vital lifeline for Lourdes as a safety-net provider, supporting essential services for greater Binghamton’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. The savings from the 340B program helps Lourdes stretch its resources to provide charity care services and serve the community, and because the program is funded by drug company discounts, it does not expend any additional federal funds or taxpayer money. The 340B program is tailored to support Lourdes, a hospital that provides high levels of service to low-income individuals. Routinely, 340B hospitals like Lourdes provide more of the unprofitable, vital health services needed by the poor than do their non-340B counterparts. Our 340B savings are an important tool that allows us to stretch scarce resources and increase access to care for our most vulnerable patients.

In 2021, Lourdes provided approximately $52.7 million in uncompensated care to the community. Its 340B benefit for FY2021 of $32.7 million was an important tool that allowed Ascension Lourdes to stretch scarce resources and increase access to care for the most vulnerable patients.

Ascension Lourdes programs enabled by 340B benefits:

  • Charitable pharmacies: operates a Hope Dispensary location serving uninsured populations with free medication to those in the Greater Binghamton area.
  • Medication affordability program: helps financially vulnerable patients obtain medications and supplies for free or at reduced costs. This benefit amounts to $2 million a year in free medications and copay assistance to those who qualify up to and including 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • Dental care clinic: provides low-cost dental care to poor and vulnerable populations, serving all those in need regardless of ability to pay.
  • Medical Mission at Home: historically held at least annually, the event provides free medical, vision, and dental services to those in need.
